Happy International Women’s Day, Poptropicans! Every year, March 8^th represents a day dedicated to celebrating women and their contributions to the world. And celebrate we shall!

 

Here are just a few famous female role models you might find interesting:

 

• Harriet Tubman: Harriet Tubman was an incredible leader in the United States’ abolitionist movement. After escaping slavery, Tubman is responsible for freeing hundreds of slaves via the Underground Railroad and taking on the roles of spy, nurse, and the first female military leader in the US.  

 

• Ruth Bader Ginsburg: Ruth Bader Ginsburg was the second woman (and first Jewish woman) to serve on the US Supreme Court. She dedicated much of her career to advocating for women’s rights and gender equality.  

 

• Helen Keller: Helen Keller, a deaf and blind woman, was a fierce and determined advocate in the disability rights and women’s suffragette movements. Keller’s accomplishments changed the way many perceived people with disabilities and

 

• Katherine Johnson: Katherine Johnson was an African American scientist at NASA, famous for her crucial role in researching the math and physics behind space travel. In fact, the book and movie, Hidden Figures, highlighted Johnson’s accomplishments!  

 

Not only is International Women’s Day important for recognizing female achievement and empowering others, but it’s also another chance to think about the inequities of the past, present, and future. For example, the UN Women organization welcomes the world in supporting this year’s theme, “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow.”
